Dr. Wright has been researching the fundamentals of the setup for over 15 years. He has measured over 2000 students in the past 10 years, from beginner through tour player. Only about 5% of students have square hips and shoulder lines. Most people have a rotation in their hips and/or shoulders. An individual's rotation determines their stance, stance width, grip and alignment to their target, making consistently good golf very difficult.
Dr. Wright completed a 2 year research project at the Dr. Jobe Biomechanics Lab at Centinela Hospital in late 2006. The primary focus of the study was balance. Each subject in the study had 1000 sensors placed in each shoe. This measurement gave immediate feedback on the exact positions of force. The results provided tremendous insights and dispelled old beliefs about set up to the golf ball from grip, to posture to stance width. Four utility patent applications for instruction resulted from the study.
His research explored the impact of over 100 variations in setup as related to balance and club path, optics and stance width, body symmetry and balance. In summary, the research results showed that everyone's biomechanics are different. T
hus, every player's set up to the golf ball is different.
Also, out of this research came a 3 minute exercise program adapted from Dr. Robert Watkins' Trunk Stabilization Program. Dr. Watkins is the spine surgeon to the PGA Tour. This exercise "squares" a player's core and eliminates numerous adjustments for balance (in particular the hip line) in the address position. Dr. Wright uses the simple measurement systems that came out of this study and the brief exercise program in both his individual lessons and golf schools.
