GOLF MAGAZINE - June 2005GOLF MAGGAZINE - THE 25 BEST GOLF SCHOOLS IN AMERICA

CREATE A LINE YOU CAN SEE
Combo shots will lead you into the hole

By Dr. David Wright With David Dusek

Most players focus on a small area near the hole when they putt. But the game's best putters see the entire path the ball travels to the hole. Seeing the whole path can be tricky, however, because the harder you hit a putt, the less it breaks; the softer you hit the ball, the more it breaks. Golf Magazine ArticleTo improve your ability to see a putt's entire line, start by concentrating on the last few inches.
Here's how:

READ IT Stand behind a 10-foot putt that has alight break to it and read the green.

DROP THREE Place three balls end-to-end along the path you think your ball will travel right before it enters the cup, based on how hard you intend to hit it.

ROLL IT Strike your putt firmly enough to reach the cup, but try to hit the nearest of the three balls (left). If you succeed, the balls will collide and the one on the lip should drop in, providing that you read the perfect combination of break and speed.

Dr. David Wright teaches at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, CA.
